Our History:
Rob Ickes and Betty Wheeler founded ResoSummit in 2007 with the goal to bring the best dobro players and teachers together with scores of student participants at every proficiency level, for equal parts education and inspiration. Aiming for 50 participants that first year, registration quickly shot past that mark, and on Nov. 8, 2007, 80 participants gathered at Nashville's Scarritt Bennett Center with a stellar faculty - Rob Ickes, Mike Auldridge, Phil Leadbetter, Cindy Cashdollar, Randy Kohrs, Michael Witcher, Andy Hall, and Jerry Douglas - along with two luthiers extraordinaire -Tim Scheerhorn and Paul Beard -for the inaugural event. The first ResoSummit shows at the Station Inn were performed by bands featuring world-class dobro players: Three Ring Circle (Rob Ickes), The Infamous Stringdusters (Andy Hall), Mike Auldridge with The Claire Lynch Band, and Missy Raines & The New Hip. (Mike Witcher).

Since 2007, ResoSummit has included 100+ participants each year, at five proficiency levels ranging from beginner to very advanced. along with a diverse array of faculty and performing ensembles. The following have served as ResoSummit faculty over the years:

What would have been Year 14 for ResoSummit became, instead, the Year of Covid-19. Or, you can think of it as an extra year to woodshed before heading to Nashville for ResoSummit 2021! And for our part, we're using the unexpected extra time to plan for the best-ever Summit, making ResoSummit 2021 well worth the wait.

ResoSummit Overview

Registration: ResoSummit registration takes place online; when registration opens, we send an eblast with the registration announcement and registration link to everyone on the ResoSummit email list. (Every year, we sell out quickly - often within an hour - based on that eblast.) We give registration and wait-list priority to international participants, to allow for the greater complexity of arranging travel and other logistics. The 2021 registration fee has not yet been set; the 2019 fee was $500.

The registration fee includes the opening all-Summit session, 10 workshop sessions, the two "optional activities hour" sessions, nightly after-hours jamming, three Station Inn performances, and the closing faculty performance. It does not include optional on-site housing or meals. On-site meals are availableby pre-order – we will send confirmed participants a meal-order survey in October. At that time, you will be able to order meals (for yourself and any friends/family), and also reserve "Friends and Family" Station Inn tickets for any family or friends who may be joining you in Nashville.

Schedule: ResoSummit begins on Thursday. Registration opens at 3pm in the lobby of Scarritt-Bennett's Laskey Building, and on-site room check-in opens then also. There is an optional "get acquainted" dinner at 5:30pm in the Susie Gray Dining Hall at the Scarritt-Bennett Center, our ResoSummit "home", and the first official event of ResoSummit will be an 7pm performance at the Station Inn. Informal jamming space is available after-hours, as deep into the night as you wish to use it.

Friday features an all-Summit opening session, where you'll meet the faculty and hear them play in duos or trios. Three workshop sessions follow, plus an "optional activities" hour with options ranging from informal performances and demos to one-on-one opportunities to consult with faculty and our staff luthiers during "office hours". After a dinner break we'll be back at the Station Inn for a performance, followed by informal after-hours jamming.

Saturday has a similar schedule, with four workshop sessions, an optional activities hour, and an 7pm performance at The Station Inn.

Sunday features three workshop sessions. ResoSummit then closes with a faculty performance, which will end by 5pm. Some participants leave on Sunday afternoon or evening; others stay overnight and leave on Monday, so we provide after-hours jamming space for Sunday night.

Check out the 2019 schedule to get a more detailed view of the overall ResoSummit experience; note that there are changes to the schedule each year.

Workshops: Workshops change every year, but this 16-page PDF with detailed workshop descriptions for ResoSummit 2019 is a good example of the range of workshops we offer: Workshops2019. Workshop signups are by an online survey; check out the PDF (printable) version of the 2019 online sign-up survey to see what workshops were scheduled for each of the ten workshop sessions: Workshop.Signup.Survey-2019

Lodging and meals: Optional on-site housing is available on campus. Details about on-site rooms (with the prior year's prices) are here. Optional on-site meals are described here. Note that there are many restaurants (from fast food to fine dining) close by, in easy walking distance.

Houston Caldwell Scholarship and other youth scholarships: If you know any young dobro players who are ready for "Total Dobro Overload," make sure they know about our Houston Caldwell Scholarship, awarded to someone 18 and younger each year. The scholarship covers the registration fee; housing and meal underwriting is also available. To apply, send an email to: resosummit@gmail.com. In addition to our Houston Caldwell Scholarship, we work hard every year to provide some underwriting for as many young people as possible. Contact us by email about these opportunities. Want to help support young participants? Add a scholarship contribution to your registration fee, or contact us by email for information on making a contribution by credit card or check. Another source of scholarship funds are deposits that registrants who cancel donate in lieu of receiving a refund.
